Nourish Your Temple

Caring for a temple requires constant awareness and work. Yes, work! (Heavy sigh!)

There are many aspects to caring for a temple. In this article we’ll consider what we put into the temple of our body. What do we allow to enter our temple, how do we use it, and how often do we use it? When you think about these things, the first thoughts that may come to mind are about food.

Most religions have what they consider a sacred space that only believers are allowed to enter for the purpose of worship. As part of the requirements for entering the sacred space most also have a code of health – recommendations or requirements for taking care of the body to keep it clean and pure. And at the top of the list is food.

The Energy or Frequency of Food Makes a Difference
We all need food. And most of us think about, prepare or purchase and eat food at least once or twice a day – some of us much more than that. But do we think about how much light energy is in the food we eat?

All things — objects, environments and people vibrate to their own unique frequency, and that includes food. Believe it or not, some foods vibrate at very low frequencies and are absolutely not good for our bodies — even though they make be tasty and give us a temporary energy boost. The frequency of other foods brings long-lasting energy, nourishment and strength to our bodies.

Food and Our Emotions

Food also has an emotional connection for almost everyone. My comfort food as a teenager was my mom’s homemade potato soup. It was warm and soothing to my body when I was not feeling well. Some of us eat when we are stressed, or bored, because the clock says it’s time to eat, or to protect ourselves by creating a physical barrier of excess weight.

Frequently, especially for women, food brings up a conversation about weight — usually the idea that I shouldn’t eat X because: “I’m overweight,” or “I need to lose X number of pounds to feel great, or look good.” In answer to those cries of distress and discomfort, diets and remedies abound — the low carb diet, the high carb diet, the protein diet, the juice diet, the fasting diet, Dr. So and So’s Diet – the list is endless. And all offer the golden ticket — a slim, healthy, well-toned body.

What is the Answer to This Dilemma?

I’ve tried a number of these diets, and have discovered that it always comes down to this: What works for my body? And what works for my body always takes me back to what my faith calls the Word of Wisdom. That guideline teaches us to eat whole grains, fruits and vegetables in season, and to abstain from strong drinks — which include alcohol, coffee, tea, and any habit forming substance, such as tobacco and drugs. It also recommends eating meat sparingly, only in times of cold or famine. Other religions — Jewish, Hindi, Islam, Buddhism among them, have very similar dietary recommendations. It is helpful to remember that my body is a temple, and to use high-frequency foods to fuel it.

Many books have been written about what kinds of diets are good for our bodies. In my opinion, the best “diet” is a lifestyle that creates and maintains healthy eating habits, not a temporary 6- to 8-week “fast fix.”

These two books contain solid, thoughtful and practical advice for how to select the foods that are best for your body.

Original Fast Foods” by James and Colleen Simmons, written and published almost 20 years ago. It may be difficult to find a copy, but it’s well-worth the search. I located copies for sale in online used book stores. They also have a YouTube channel featuring demonstration videos of some of the recipes they offer in the book. https://www.youtube.com/@jamessi155

Simmons did his homework. He suffered for 10 years with debilitating illness and went from doctor to doctor without finding any relief. He finally concluded to ask God for guidance, and the answer he got was basically the Word of Wisdom diet. He ate a diet of whole foods — healthy greens, vegetables, fruits and grains, and regained his health. The book shares his story and that of his wife and children as they adopted a new way of eating. He shares what he learned from studying common dietary recommendations as well as scientific research on the food needs of our bodies. He outlines a plan which he calls “Daniels Challenge.” The title comes the Biblical story of Daniel and his friends who chose to eat a plant-based diet instead of King Nebuchadnezzar’s fare. Also included are recipes that he and his family developed and enjoyed as they learned a new way to eat.

The Food Codes” by Lana Nelson
Dr. Bradley Nelson, the creator of The Emotion Code, Body Code and Belief Code – and Lana’s brother-in-law, gives this recommendation for Lana’s Food Codes method of selecting the right foods for you.

The Food Codes makes the abstract idea of communicating with your own subconscious mind simple and concrete. Imagine. Your food needs, what’s good for you and what’s bad for you, are different from my food needs. Everyone is different, and that’s what makes The Food Codes so eminently useful. So, you can stop listening to everyone else, change your relationship with food entirely, and start eating what your body really wants and needs. What a concept!”

The food we eat is only one component to pay attention to as we take care of our temples. Movement and sleep are two other important elements that we will discuss in future posts.
