Free to be…
Most of us long to be free in some way – free of doubt, free of discouragement, free of debt, free of indecision. Many of us long to be free of bondage that may be created by physical ailments, mental or emotional challenges or just the relentless stress of daily life. Too often we may seek this freedom through quick fixes, magic bullet offers, or one-size-fits all solutions.
Paradoxically, lasting freedom most often comes through self-government, through thoughtfully seeking, learning and persistently living true principles that support our vision of a healthy, happy life.
Early Colonists Sought Freedom
The early colonists first came to America seeking religious freedom and relief from tyranny, but old patterns of government followed them across the ocean. Many of them realized they could only be freed from the tyranny by creating a new form of self-government, based on laws respecting God-given agency and the inherent rights of individuals.
They saw this as the pathway to freedom from oppressive laws that had been in force for centuries. It was not an easy choice. Many of them paid a great price for defying the tyranny of a king. But the result of their efforts created a magnificent form of government, one that is unrivaled in all the world.
Self-Government Is the Path to Freedom
Just as those early colonists discovered that choosing the path to self-government as a nation was a necessary step to liberty, we may discover that freeing ourselves from personal bondage requires us to become more self-governing as individuals. This can help us form new ways of looking at ourselves – our habits, thought and behavior patterns, and old beliefs that are often generational.
Creating Lasting Change
If lasting change and freedom is our desire, perhaps being open to new ways of looking at how we govern ourselves is the answer. This may involve investigating new solutions to old challenges by seeking guidance from reliable sources, and then acting on that knowledge. This can lead to finding a reliable path to personal freedom and health. It is a path often unnoticed or unchosen, because it requires daily effort, patience and persistence.
